Pudgy Penguins is an Ethereum PFP collection of 8,888 cartoon penguins launched in July–August 2021 by a group of college friends (originally led by Cole “ColeThereum” Villemain, with Clayton Patterson, “Mickyj,” and “Jonah”) that quickly sold out and drew mainstream attention.

After internal turmoil, the IP was acquired in April 2022 by entrepreneur Luca Netz for 750 ETH (~$2.5M) and refocused into a consumer brand spanning toys, licensing, and media. Under Netz, the team rolled out Pudgy Toys at Walmart (expanded to 3,100 stores in 2024) and launched Overpass IP so holders can license their NFTs and earn royalties from product uses—positioning Pudgy Penguins as a leading Web3-native character brand bridging NFTs and mass retail.
